When you agree to go on the journey that music intends for you, rather than insist on the one you believe you want for yourself, the adventure is deep and humbling.

In the year 2000, and well into his Australian career as songwriter, front man and manager for progressive rock band Very Unique Existence, Rich Latimer was handed the opportunity to extend his music beyond the ordinary...beyond traditional motivations for success, and into music as a force for powerful transformation.

20 years on, this journey is well underway. Every album you listen to and every show you see, you will feel the bridges he has built between the magical qualities of music, intimate and truthful story, distinct and powerful musical execution.

Working technically and fluidly with music and the environment, his latest album Dreamer, due for Brazilian release in March, has been transformed into a live multi-sensory show connecting sound, projection, video-mapping, hologram, scenography, theatrical performance and even aromas. 

But this evolution took time.

The Grunge Movement came on strong in the 1990s with Rich at the leading edge. From Pearl Jam to Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and beyond, it was an immersive musical era. However, unlike most immersed in the cultural movement of their day, Rich was also exposed in equal parts to the revolutionary music of the 60s and 70s, learning to play guitar to Led Zeppelin, John Lennon, Cat Stevens, The Beatles and more. 

Without knowing it, Rich was building his first musical bridge. Two distinct genres created a musical framework on the strength of technical mastery combined with equally strong storytelling...songs that moved, songs that were destined to stand the test of time.
Aware that his powerful and unique expression of intimate stories captured the energy in a room in ways that conventional rock music had often not been able to harness, Rich took Very Unique Existence all the way to the Australian music charts with several EPs and a large album. The beginnings of the commercially successful rock career he had been planning all along was now in full swing.

But music had other plans.

Destiny arrived at high speed with a shocking and life-threatening car accident involving his brother, who lay in a coma for many months, circled by a stream of medical predictions citing that he would not survive.

Rich spent this time by his brother’s side, singing. His walk down the hospital hallway became as familiar to the staff as it did to himself, always with guitar in hand, ready to begin again and again, day after day, calling to his brother with music to come back.

As his brother returned to consciousness, the medical specialists were left with little to do but call it by the only name they could find...a medical miracle.

As the power of this miracle continued to unfold, Rich began to question everything about music. What is music? Why do I play it? What do I want to do with it?

It was no longer about building a rock star life. It had become about communicating something bigger, something that created space for people to find their own physical and emotional transformation through music. An evolution that gave birth to Awareness Shows.
Awareness Shows is a landmark youth program developed and performed by Rich that promotes conscious connection and positive messaging to teenagers in schools. 

It is the only program of its kind, using real stories of exposure to abuse, violence and addiction from Rich’s young life to inspire and release teens suffering in silence. The whole school approach and after show support have supported many tens of thousands of teenagers across Australia and America.

And so, it was his goal to continue to impact and elevate the lives of young people around the world with Awareness Shows.

During his first three-month trip to Brazil, Rich teamed up with Prado LastName to record and produce Uplift, the first track of his new solo album Dreamer, recorded and released in Brazil in 2019.

Working hand in hand with Prado, and without a stitch of Portuguese under his tongue, they used instinct to create the songs, drawing on the people and natural environment around them to create an album of immersion, described as having a depth of composition, warmth and golden glow seamlessly blended with spontaneous creativity, fun and commercial relevance.

Working technically and fluidly with the music and the environment, this album was transformed into a live multisensory show connecting sound, projection, video-mapping, hologram, scenography, theatrical performance and even aromas. These shows are the public extension of Awareness Shows. 

Rich’s fusion of music, sensory experience and transformational stories continues to peak, elevated by working with some of the most incredible producers and musicians in Brazil.

At its core, Rich uses music to help people open up the space within themselves where the synergy of mind, body and spirit work together, to wake up from the amnesia so often brought on by the modern world. 

Creating music and space that facilitates actual transformation is the goal, because music always knows the way.
